The Institute is a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh dedicated to CMA education and research. The Institute was set up in 1958 as a branch of the Pakistan Institute of Industrial Accountants (PIIA), renamed as Bangladesh Institute of Industrial Accountants (BIIA) after the independence of Bangladesh in 1972, reconstituted as the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh under the Cost and Management Accountants Ordinance, 1977 and finally continuing its legacy by Cost and Management Accountants Act, 2018. The Institute is governed by a Council constituted under the provision of the Cost and Management Accountants Act, 2018. The Council consists of 16 members elected by the members of ICMAB and 5 nominees from the Government of Bangladesh. The Council is elected for a period of three years. Every year one President, two Vice-Presidents, one Secretary and one Treasurer are elected as office bearers from amongst the elected council members.
The regular operational affairs of the Institute are, however, carried out by a team of full-time employees led by the Executive Director who acts as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Institute.
